The presence of God (Psalm 46)
If we were to ask, who is here?, we could list the names of those people we can see, if we know who they are. Otherwise we could describe them in some way or another. More importantly, God is here. If we were to ask, who is two streets away, we might suggest some names, but we know that they would not be the same people as are here. But God would be there as well as here. If we were to ask, who is everywhere, the only answer is God. If we were to ask, who is here and why, we would need to ask questions to find out. In order to get the answers from those we can see, it is easy to do so. But we cannot know all the reasons why God is here today. His Word tells us some general reasons, but he also has specific reasons. The why of God’s presence in one place is beyond us, so what can we say about his presence everywhere? But his presence is never haphazard or meaningless. It is obvious that the author of Psalm 46 valued the presence of God. Three time he says that the Lord...
